So harvest has finally started for Idle Cellars. We picked the Kick Ranch Viognier yesterday the 27th at 6AM. Since we had such a good response from the 2010 Viognier we bid for the whole block and received 5.4 tons of fruit, by far our largest white harvest to date. This will hopefully give us 300 cases of Viognier from 2012, I hope everyone is ready. One of our favorite parts of harvest is spending quality sunsets and sunrises in beautiful vineyards in Sonoma.
We were blessed to catch the sunset on the 26th when we dropped off picking bins and the sunrise when we went to facilitate the harvest. It was beautiful. We picked for 3 hours hand sorting all the leaves from macro bins on the tractor and pressed it as soon as we got the winery. The juice was spectacular with hints of pear and peach. We ended making margarita drinks with the Viognier juice, Fortaleza Reposado and lime. The juice was sulfured and is cold soaking for 4 days before we inoculate it with yeast. This is going to be a a great white wine. We’ll be bottling it in March for Spring and summer. Here are some photos of the harvest.
