Winemaking
Our Commitment to Sustainable and Organic Winemaking
Idle Cellars is a boutique micro-winery committed to producing exceptional small-batch wines that capture the essence of Sonoma County. Embodying the spirit of a winemaker-owned and operated establishment, we are truly dedicated to our craft.
Idle Cellars has embraced environmentally responsible practices since its founding. Long before organic and sustainable wines became widely discussed, we were already working with growers and partners who shared our respect for nature and traditional farming methods. This long-term mindset continues to shape how we source grapes, craft our wines, and present them to our customers today.

A Longstanding Commitment
Our winemaking approach allows us to wear many hats while crafting Idle wines. Some days we are chefs, other days we are chemists, artists, or farmers. When the grapes arrive at the winery during harvest after being hand-picked overnight or in the early morning, we sort through the grapes to pull out any flaws that don’t meet our high-quality standards.
Our recipes adapt based on the harvest for each varietal. Like a chef cooking a nice meal, we constantly test our product using our senses of taste, smell and touch to determine where we need to adjust the wine as we seek the perfect balance of ingredients.
Our wines are aged in barrels hand-selected for each varietal to bring out the right flavors from the grapes. From vine to bottle, every sip tells a story from where the grape starts, to how it develops and brings itself to the epic conclusion of Idle wine in your glass.
Working with Organically and Sustainably Farmed Vineyards
As a micro-winery, Idle Cellars does not own large estates. Instead, we collaborate with carefully selected vineyard partners across Sonoma County. This approach allows us to choose vineyards that align with our values and quality standards.
We prioritize partners who:
- avoid synthetic pesticides and herbicides
- practice organic or biodynamic farming
- harvest grapes by hand to reduce environmental impact and preserve fruit quality.
By working closely with growers who share our philosophy, we ensure that sustainability begins in the vineyard, where wine truly starts.

Are Idle Cellars wines certified organic?
Idle Cellars works with organically and sustainably farmed vineyards, but not all of our wines carry formal organic certification. Certification processes can be complex and costly for small producers. Our focus remains on working with growers who genuinely follow organic and responsible practices, whether or not they pursue official labels.
Is sustainable wine different in taste?
Sustainability does not mean compromising on quality. In fact, organically farmed grapes and minimal intervention winemaking often result in wines that better express their terroir, with more natural balance and character.

Does Idle Cellars use pesticides or herbicides in their vineyards?
We prioritize vineyard partners who avoid synthetic pesticides and herbicides and instead rely on organic or low-impact farming methods. This helps protect soil health, local ecosystems, and the people working in the vineyards.
